Plot summary
Tonya Harding is four years old in Portland, Oregon when her mother, LaVona Golden, signs her up for skating lessons. Coach Diane Rawlinson does not take beginners, but changes her mind once she sees Tonya on the ice. LaVona is violent with her daughter and insists that the harsh treatment is what makes her great. Tonya's parents pull her out of school to train, and then her father leaves the family. She grows into one of the strongest skaters in the United States, yet judges fault her homemade costumes, her music and her reputation. At fifteen she meets Jeff Gillooly, and their marriage turns abusive.

- Robbie trained for four months for the skating scenes, and the production could not find a skating double able to perform a triple Axel, so the jump was accomplished with visual effects.
- Throughout the shoot Robbie suffered from a herniated disc in her neck and had routine MRIs to make sure it was safe for her to keep filming the skating scenes.
- Margot Robbie, who played Harding and co-produced the film, did not realize the screenplay was based on a real event until after she had finished reading it.
- Rogers said the curious thing about Jeff Gillooly was that he refused to take any money for life rights, for his interview, for anything.
- Sufjan Stevens was not commissioned to write for the film but sent in his song “Tonya Harding” anyway; it was turned down because no way could be found for it to be used in the film.
