Plot summary
On Santa Prisca, a boy serves his father's prison term at Peña Duro with his mother, who teaches him to despise weakness. He survives experiments with the steroid Venom, gains superhuman strength, and escapes as Bane. In Gotham City, Bane destroys Arkham Asylum and frees its inmates. Batman and his partner Robin confront the escaped Mad Hatter and save his captives. Batman ignores concerns about his crippling fatigue as he rounds up the inmates. Jean-Paul Valley, who fights as Azrael, is stopped by Batman from killing a trafficker and asks for help.

- Producer Rick Morales initially storyboarded Knightfall for the PG-13 rating expected of a Batman film, but executives told him he could push further, so he had his team ramp up the violence to earn it an R rating instead.
- Producer Jim Krieg said one scene of characters burning to death was originally written to happen offscreen, but the team decided to show it more explicitly once given room to push the violence further.
