Plot summary
In the jungles of Panama, an Army Ranger platoon sets out on a training exercise as a hurricane arrives. Master Sergeant Nathan West leads the men on a live fire course through the jungle. Two come back: Sergeant Ray Dunbar, helping the wounded Second Lieutenant Levi Kendall. No other bodies are found, so West and the rest of the team are counted as dead. Captain Julia Osborne, a military police investigator, questions both survivors, but Dunbar refuses to speak with her. The post commander, Colonel Bill Styles, calls in his friend Tom Hardy, an ex-Ranger and DEA agent, to help.

- McTiernan told Empire in June 2014 that the production was an absolute nightmare: a week before shooting he was ordered to film the original draft of the screenplay, which did not work, and a lawyer's letter warned he would be sued if he told the studio. He squirrelled away half a million dollars for reshoots.
- As of 2026, Basic is still McTiernan's most recent film, following his criminal charges and eventual incarceration related to wiretapping.
