Plot summary
Sarah Barton works as a cashier in a small desert town in Nevada, where she lives with her mother. When a co-worker's complaint costs her the job, she meets Pepper, a drifter sleeping at an antiques store that belongs to Sarah's family. Sarah lets Pepper stay there until she finds somewhere else to live. The two spend their days together, and Sarah is drawn into Pepper's partying, which her boyfriend Haden resents. He offers her a job where he works and a place to stay, and she turns him down on both. Sarah also comes along on a trip to Reno, where Pepper talks a gambler into handing over money for blackjack.
