Plot summary
Money is tight at the South Side Chicago barbershop Calvin Palmer Jr. inherited from his father, and he can no longer borrow. On a cold winter day he sells the shop to Lester Wallace, a loan shark, without a word to the barbers or the customers. Eddie, an old barber, holds strong opinions and has no customers. Jimmy, who is highly educated, cannot stand Isaac, a new white barber who only wants a chance to cut hair. Ricky, an ex-con with two strikes already on his record, is trying to stay straight. Terri cannot bring herself to leave her two-timing boyfriend, and Dinka, another barber, is in love with Terri and gets nowhere with her.

- Days after the release of the film, Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson expressed public umbrage over comments made about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., with Sharpton advocating a boycott and Jackson wanting the dialogue excised from future editions; neither request was granted.
- The jokes by Cedric the Entertainer's character Eddie Walker about the pastor's promiscuity with women and the line "Rosa Parks ain't do nothin' but sit ... down" were criticized for defaming popular Black figures, and Jesse Jackson asked publicly for them to be edited out of the DVD and VHS releases.
- Producer Robert Teitel recalled that on the first day of location scouting the production came across three abandoned storefronts at 79th Street and Exchange Avenue in South Chicago, and decided the spot was a natural fit for the set of Calvin's barbershop.
