Plot summary
James Hirsch takes dimethyltryptamine-19, a drug used in the government's Project MKUltra experiments, while a friend films him. Strange music and voices come from a nearby radio, and a shadowy figure appears. James vanishes. Anne Roland, a reporter and a college friend of James, is worried about his disappearance. In his house she finds a betamax cassette of the MKUltra experiments and his notes on the project. A local expert tells her the broadcast is a phantom radio station audible only in the desert at night, so she drives out there and flees when a monstrous form appears. A clue in the notes leads her to Thomas Blackburn, a counter-culture writer known for drug use and unpredictable behavior, who rebuffs her when she mentions Project MKUltra. She goes to his house and lies to win his confidence.

- Casting the lead of Anne was harder than casting Ted Levine: writer-director Blair Erickson said he auditioned "several hundred" women before choosing Katia Winter for the journalist role.
- Banshee Chapter had only 28 days to shoot, so writer-director Blair Erickson cut characters from the beginning of the script to fit the limited shooting schedule.
