Plot summary
Frank Vega runs a community boxing center in East L.A., where he trains young boxers including Manny Parks, a fighter preparing for his professional debut. Frank shares the building with Bernie Pope, an agoraphobic liquor store owner. Manny leaves one session early, after a text message, and gives Frank a cellphone with a recorded thank-you on it. Manny is killed, and at his memorial Frank comforts Manny's mother Rosaria and his little sister Julia; Rosaria asks Frank to find whoever is responsible. Armed robbers then raid the building, and Frank fights them off and saves Bernie. A police friend tells Frank that Manny had narcotics on him. Frank warns his students that drug dealing will not be tolerated in the gym, then questions Manny's friend Tucson, who denies knowing anything.
