Plot summary
A wealthy Russian mobster, Gorsky, sends the mercenary Toorop to fetch a young woman out of a Noelite convent in Kyrgyzstan and deliver her to New York City. He acts for the Noelite Church and equips Toorop with weapons and a United Nations passport implanted beneath his skin. Aurora, the young woman, travels with her guardian, Sister Rebeka, a nun of the order. Toorop is a former Marine from upstate New York, deported and now making a living as a smuggler in Eastern Europe. The group crosses Russia, where war and terrorism have left the cities crowded and dangerous, and gunmen who say Aurora's supposedly dead father sent them are on their trail.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Mathieu Kassovitz disowned the finished film, likening it to a "bad episode of 24". He said 20th Century Fox interfered throughout production and that he never had a chance to shoot a scene the way it was scripted or the way he wanted it.
- In March 2007, after shooting in the Czech Republic, the crew took a two-week hiatus over uncooperative weather, including a lack of snow, and problems with set construction, then scouted Iceland for snowy locations to shoot six to eight days of footage.
- The tattoo on the right side of Toorop's neck was designed by American artist Khem Caigan and is an emblem that originally appeared in the Schlangekraft Necronomicon in 1977.
- French actor Vincent Cassel was initially sought for the lead role. In February 2006 Vin Diesel entered negotiations to star in Babylon A.D. instead, dropping out of the lead role of Hitman in the process.
