Plot summary
In 1971, with Tamil Nadu's southern districts in drought, the landlords Ayyadurai and Madasamy, friends from different castes in Tenkasi, work to keep people alive. When the legislator Shanmugapandi is accused of smuggling the government's rice, Madasamy leads the people who stop the lorries, and Ayyadurai stands with them. The townspeople shield Ayyadurai and press him to contest the by-election. Decades later, the unopposed MLA of Tenkasi for over thirty-five years, he resigns after the state refuses to sanction his plan to renovate the constituency's lakes. His son Chelladurai, a civil engineer, and Madasamy meet him at Tenkasi Junction. Madasamy's teenage daughter Selvi deliberately fails her twelfth-standard exam, wanting to marry Chelladurai, who refuses because their families belong to different castes. Shanmugapandi's son Karuppusamy has contested against Ayyadurai three times, without success, and has made attempts on his life.
