Plot summary
Paruthiyur, a village near Madurai, still practices caste segregation. Paruthiveeran, called Paruthi, is the son of an upper-caste Agamudayar father and a lower-caste Kurava mother whom the villagers ostracized; after his parents die, his maternal uncle Chevvaazhai raises him and indulges his misbehavior. Paruthi harasses the villagers for money and fun and is arrested for petty crimes. He wants enough notoriety for a television news appearance and a spell in Madras Jail. His paternal cousin Muththazhagu has loved him since childhood, from the day he pulled her out of a well; she vowed then to marry him. Her father Kazhuvathevan, a respected member of the village council and a caste sectarian, does not approve of Paruthi's inter-caste background. She deliberately fails her school tests to delay a marriage, and Paruthi keeps her at a distance.

- Original producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja could not finance Paruthiveeran to completion and gave it up to Ameer, but Ameer then ran out of funds and the film went back to Gnanavel. Both sides accuse each other of failing to pay what they owe, and as of December 2023 the dispute was still unresolved.
- Paruthiveeran is credited with shaping how later Tamil film protagonists were written, often as unkempt ruffians, and with popularising "Madurai-made movies", known as 3M, showing Madurai as violent. Director Ameer later felt the 3M theme was overexposed and recycled.
- Karthi made his feature film debut as the title character of Paruthiveeran even though he said he preferred directing to acting; he agreed to the part because he found the film "so compelling".
- About 60 debutants, mostly real people from the region, appeared in Paruthiveeran, and no dubbing artists were used: every artist was brought to Chennai to dub their own voice.
- Paruthiveeran was the first entirely village-based film Yuvan Shankar Raja had scored. He composed a folk score using rural sounds and instruments including the dholak, nadaswaram, thavil and urumee.
