Plot summary
Shanmugam works as a veterinary doctor in the city, where he lives with his wife Valarmathi and their two children. At school he loved a classmate named Dhanalakshmi, and the two were parted; she was made to marry her brother-in-law. Years later he comes across her again, widowed and poor, living on the platforms with her son Balu. A friend's house cannot take her in, so he hires her as the family's servant-maid. The past comes back to both of them, and their attempts to keep a distance leave a strain in the household.
