Plot summary
David is an introverted American photographer, on assignment in remote Iceland and adrift there, an outsider among the people he meets. He comes upon a body that has washed ashore, and the local investigation that follows ties him for a time to a country that is not his own. He gets to know the handful of residents in the area, including Marie, an Italian woman whose unease does not match her striking face, and Jóhann, her Icelandic husband, whose manner stays calm. Over the days that follow, his interest in the couple grows, and he drifts into the mystery of their lives.
