Plot summary
Robgen Industries markets the J Series Automatic as a security system, an android model built to shield people from violent attacks. One night an Automatic called J269 finds a Robgen executive attempting to rape Nora Rochester, one of the company's employees. J269 intervenes, and while stopping the crime he inadvertently kills the executive. He contacts Goddard Marx, the Robgen chairman who created him, and reports the incident. Marx tells the android to remain there with Rochester until help arrives, though he plans to bury the incident and sends mercenaries to eliminate the pair. J269 and Rochester are fugitives now, hunted by a paramilitary hit squad.
