Olivier Gruner
Biography
Olivier Gruner is a French actor and filmmaker who also practices martial arts and once competed as a professional kickboxer. Born in Paris, he began training in martial arts as a boy of 11, inspired by a Bruce Lee film, and went on to study Shotokan karate, boxing and kickboxing. He served in the French Navy, then fought professionally from 1984 and took a silver medal at the 1985 W.A.K.O. World Championships. He left the ring in 1987 to pursue acting and made his screen debut with the urban action picture Angel Town (1990). He became known for action and martial arts films, among them Alex Raine in Albert Pyun's cyberpunk thriller Nemesis (1992), which critics praised for its stunts and special effects. Further credits include Mercenary (1996) and The Circuit (2002). Interceptor Force 2 (2002) brought his first work as a director, and he later directed, produced, wrote and acted in Re-Generator (2011) and EP/Executive Protection (2015).

Big break
Gruner left professional kickboxing behind in 1987 to act, inspired by bodybuilders Reg Park and Arnold Schwarzenegger. During the 1987 Cannes Film Festival he put up posters of himself around Cannes, and a movie producer noticed.
A change of course
After seeing a Bruce Lee movie, Gruner took up martial arts when he was 11. That film pushed him toward martial arts and a possible movie career.
Behind the camera
Gruner's first feature film as a screenwriter, director and actor, Re-Generator, premiered in 2011. The project, earlier called One Night, had been in the works since 2010.
A change of course
Gruner holds a helicopter pilot's license, and he sometimes combines flying with producing films. He flew for ABC News in Los Angeles, capturing many chase videos.
