Plot summary
Ksenia is 23 and works as a pastry chef in Moscow. She is trying to leave a failed marriage behind and start a new relationship with Egor, who works at a bank. Her son Artyom, seven, has trouble with the separation of his parents and escapes into a fantasy in which he is a superhero named Kosmoboy. On August 5, 2008, Zaur, an Ossetian peacekeeper who serves with the Russian Armed Forces and was once her husband, asks her to send the boy to his parents in Sidamonta, a village close to the border with Georgia. She agrees, though she is not sure, and arranges a few days in Sochi with Egor, who does not want the child along. Two days later the news reports fighting in South Ossetia.

- August Eighth's central plot was based on two true stories: a man who dragged his ex-girlfriend out of South Ossetia in August 2008, and the son of a friend of the producer, who suffered dissociation.
- Most of the South Ossetia scenes were shot in Abkhazia and North Ossetia–Alania; Abkhazians made up most of the extras, while the Ossetian-speaking characters were played or dubbed by North Ossetian actors.
