Plot summary
Konstantin Veshnyakov is the only man pulled alive from a Soviet spacecraft that came down in Kazakhstan, and he is taken to a military research facility. His memory of the flight is gone. Yan Rigel, the site's scientist, cannot bring it back. Colonel Semiradov then brings in Tatyana Klimova, a controversial psychiatrist, and she observes post-traumatic stress in the commander. At night, a creature forces its way out of the sleeping Veshnyakov's mouth. Semiradov explains that it emerges nightly without Veshnyakov's knowledge, that it kept him alive, and that it is now bonded to him so that separating them would kill both. He asks Klimova to find a way to part them permanently.
