Plot summary
A nuclear war has left the world in ruins, and the survivors live in an underground shelter beneath Moscow that works almost like a city. Its power comes from a technology that converts the human body into energy, leaving only gray ash, so the shelter holds a dance tournament in which the losers are consumed to keep the force field against radiation working. The contest is the main entertainment, and only its winner lives. Kostya, caught in a police raid, is forced to compete, and in the arena he meets Anya, a high-ranking official's daughter who volunteered for the sake of the city. He falls in love with her.
