Plot summary
Madison McBride arrives at Richard Miller University carrying two losses: her deranged father, gone when she was nine, and her brother Brandon, who died a year ago on this campus. She enrolls to face her past. On her way to the dorm, the janitor Wilbur Mackey tells her the building is haunted. She falls in with other freshmen at orientation, among them Holt, String, Tommy, Ivy and Maya. String looks into the dorm's history and finds that in 1935 the building, with an attached abandoned wing, served as an asylum run by Dr. Magnus Burke, a place for troubled teenagers whose treatment was considered state of the art.
