Plot summary

At seventy-five, Angus Stewart, a retired civil engineer who specialized in geology, lives alone since his wife's death; her failing mind led her to buy a donkey sanctuary, which he learned of too late. Heart trouble and other ailments mean he should no longer keep his own home. His daughter Molly Williams wants him to move in with her family, while her husband Jim Williams, a bank investment broker, favors a care facility. Angus's most loyal ally is his preteen grandson Barney Williams, who urges him to apply for the free seat Ventura Corporation is offering on the first commercial space flight. A lottery will shortlist a dozen candidates and the public will vote for the winner, though Angus is ten years past the maximum age allowed. Marcus Brown, Ventura's wealthy owner, will be aboard.
