Plot summary
Claire Harmann comes home from a psychiatric hospital to her husband and young son. One night they watch her walk into the attic, and the boy is told afterward that his mother has died. Years on, her son Alex is a morose 21-year-old university student. His estranged father, Joel, refuses to answer his questions about her death. A professor's lecture on out-of-body experiences leads Alex to try astral projection to reach her spirit. His roommates laugh at his first failed attempts.

- The Mul brothers' film had a final production budget of £65,000, and they chose to shoot it in two weeks to use fewer funds; Chris Mul said that at that budget the crew could not be paid the larger-scale minimum rates, so the shoot was almost taken like a two-week holiday.
- Rather than CGI, Chris Mul used practical effects: crew members dressed up and were almost completely blacked out so that Frank Dillane had something to act against instead of a green screen.
- Frank Dillane was the Mul brothers' first choice and the first actor they contacted for Alex, and he was eager to take the part because he suffered from sleep paralysis himself.
- Frank Dillane had just finished acting in the television show Fear The Walking Dead and was about to go to Mexico for post-production voice dubbing, so Chris and Michael Mul had only a limited time frame in which to film Astral.
- Astral used only two locations: the roommates' home in Wimbledon, London, and Royal Holloway University in Surrey, where filming was confined to the courtyard and Chris Mul had just a week because he did not want to shoot while students were there.
