Plot summary
Riya regains consciousness inside a research station on K.O.I-442, a barren world nicknamed Ash, with no memory of the journey that brought her there. As she moves through the station she is gripped by disturbing flashbacks and comes upon the bodies of her crewmates, among them Adhi, the command officer, and Kevin, her boyfriend. A man called Brion appears, claiming to be a companion who answered her distress call; he had remained on a second station in orbit, keeping Earth informed and watching the crew's progress. Riya, Brion and the dead crew were part of expeditions sent out to find habitable planets, and this one is Earth's last hope. Unable to recall her own past, Riya cannot tell whether Brion can be trusted.
