Plot summary
Duke Senior rules a British outpost in nineteenth-century Japan until his younger brother, Duke Frederick, takes the dukedom from him; the takeover comes as ninja warriors attack the family while it attends a Kabuki performance. Rosalind, Senior's daughter, stays on at Frederick's court, where her cousin Celia, Frederick's daughter, is her companion. Rosalind loves Orlando. Frederick banishes her and warns that she will die if she returns. Celia will not let her go alone, and Touchstone, the court fool, joins them. Dressed as a boy named Ganymede, Rosalind sets out with them for the Forest of Arden, where Orlando has fled from the anger of his elder brother.

- Kenneth Branagh invented a prologue in which ninja warriors attack Duke Senior's family as it attends a Kabuki performance, pinning down exactly the moment Duke Frederick usurps his brother's kingdom, a moment Shakespeare's play never shows.
- As You Like It was Kenneth Branagh's fifth Shakespeare adaptation and the only one in which he does not appear on screen, though he does provide a vocal cameo near the end of the film.
- The film was shot at Shepperton Film Studios and in the gardens of Wakehurst Place, which had never been filmed before.
- In the United States the film first aired on HBO on the evening of 21 August 2007 and never had a true theatrical release; it is the only one of Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare films to go directly to television instead of theaters in the US.

The epilogue breaks into the closing credits with Rosalind's speech, the camera panning to reveal Rosalind's actor, Bryce Dallas Howard, walking to her dressing trailer on the film's location.
