Plot summary
Edward has left his job in the city and is preparing to go to Africa, where he will do volunteer work promoting safe sex and fighting the spread of AIDS. For his send-off, his mother Patricia and his sister Cynthia have taken a cottage on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly. Edward's girlfriend Chloe is not among them; the two women have ruled the holiday family-only, which irritates him. Patricia's estranged husband has also been asked, though he only speaks vaguely of coming. Christopher, a local painter, has been hired to teach Patricia to paint the island landscape, and Rose has been hired as cook. Edward has no clear idea what he will do with his life once the Africa trip is over.
