Plot summary
At Jefferson High School, seniors are finishing the year. Sean Ryan helps Jason Gates, a student being bullied, pick up his books, then joins work on the school play, where Jason takes over the lights for Ben Harris, who is absent. At lunch, Sean tells his math teacher, Martin Blackwell, about his feelings for his friend April Lauren, and Blackwell urges him to say something. A fire alarm rings, and most students treat it as a senior prank. As they leave, they hear a low rumbling, and Blackwell and Sean see students running and screaming. Three gunshots are heard, and the students understand someone is shooting inside the school. Blackwell brings several students into his math classroom for cover, while Sean and his friend Nick flee, pulling a panicked girl named Samantha along.
