Plot summary
Sophie Rice is grieving her husband Malcolm while holding a full-time job and raising their daughter Riley, whose relationship with her has grown strained since his death eight months ago. The driver who killed him, Darby Brinkley, has gone unpunished. Then Jabir Karim, a physicist and Malcolm's friend, takes Sophie to a machine the two men assembled in his home. It can send a subatomic particle to a chosen place and moment in the past, killing any living thing that occupies the spot where it arrives. Jabir means to use it one day against the man responsible for the loss of his own family ten years ago, but it is not strong enough for that yet. He proposes a nearer target instead: Darby, at a time before the crash, so that Malcolm would live. Sophie is doubtful at first.
