Tom Neal

Biography

Tom Neal was an American actor who began as an amateur boxer in the early 1930s before moving to the stage and appearing in summer stock. He reached New York City in 1933 and made his Broadway debut in 1935. His first screen appearance came in 1938 with Out West with the Hardys. During the 1940s and 1950s he worked largely in low budget B-movies. He took a starring role alongside Frances Gifford in the 1941 Republic serial Jungle Girl. His most memorable part was Al Roberts in the film noir Detour (1945), opposite Ann Savage, a film that critics lauded. Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Chicago, he left Northwestern University after a year. Neal died in 1972.
