Plot summary
After two years teaching at the Avonlea school, Anne Shirley hopes to become a writer, but a magazine rejects her story. Her friend Diana Barry becomes engaged, and Marilla Cuthbert's improved eyesight frees Anne to seek new work. Anne accepts a teaching position at Kingsport Ladies' College in New Brunswick. There the wealthy Pringle family resents that she received the post, and Jen Pringle leads pupils who try to make her look like a poor teacher. The principal, Katherine Brooke, is cold and sarcastic. Anne also grows close to Emmeline Harris, a pupil whose father, Morgan Harris, is a widower she has met before.

- To create the sequel, writer Kevin Sullivan combined elements of three of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novels, Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of the Island (1915) and Anne of Windy Poplars (1936), into one screen story and invented his own plotline.
- Sullivan invented the character of Mrs. Harris as a composite of several matriarchs found in Montgomery's novels, and cast British Oscar winner Wendy Hiller in the role.
