Plot summary
Money is tight in the Stonecypher household, where Julia is raising two young daughters, Deenie and Emily Rose, on her own. Days before Christmas she loses her job. Brian Harding, a banker from the city, then arrives at her door with the news that the family's house is being taken back and that they will have nowhere to live, because she cannot pay what she owes. Brian drives off as a snowstorm moves in, and his car slides off the road into a ditch; he is injured. Despite his surly manner, Julia takes him in to recover, and the storm keeps all four of them inside the isolated house.
