Plot summary
Queen Arolake is the youngest wife of the king of Oyo. The older queens dislike her, the king's favor toward her stirs rivalry among them, and she has no wish to lie with a husband so much older than she is. Saro comes to Oyo as a stranger and supports himself at the aso-ofi loom, the trade of a weaver. He and Arolake fall in love and plan to run away together. Word of the affair reaches the king, who sentences Saro to death. A mythical Akala bird wakes him from that death, and he takes the name Aníkúlápó, which speaks of death kept in a purse.
