Plot summary
Eddie Everett was a star pitcher until 1992, when he dropped a ground ball in the American League Championship Series and cost the California Angels a trip to the World Series. Six years on he is divorced, his pitching has faded, and he has almost no contact with his thirteen-year-old daughter, Laurel. At a game against the Arizona Crimson Devils, Claire, his ex-wife, announces a job in Boston and leaves Laurel in his care. Laurel finds his life nothing like what she imagined. One night she prays for her father to be given another chance, and Bob Bugler, an angel and a former Angels pitcher whose own career ended badly, is sent to answer her.
