Plot summary
In 1912, the Birling family of Brumley, a manufacturing town in the North Midlands, sit down to dinner. The occasion is Sheila Birling's engagement to Gerald Croft, son of a factory owner more successful than her father. Eric, the Birlings' son, is there, and the family ignores his drinking. The maid, Edna, brings word that a police inspector has called. Inspector Goole is looking into the death of a young woman, Eva Smith. He shows Arthur Birling a photograph of her but keeps it from Eric and Gerald.
