Plot summary

Kihachi and his two young sons, Zenko and Masako, walk the industrial flatlands on Tokyo's edge in search of factory work. With no job to be had, the family lives on the reward the boys earn catching stray dogs for the government's anti-rabies campaign, and the money for their room at an inn is running low. Zenko spends one bounty on an officer's cap he wants, and his father is angry, since the coins were meant for food. Otaka, a widow with a young daughter, is looking for work as well, and the boys and her daughter make friends when their paths cross. Kihachi's old friend Otsune finds him work and offers the family a room at the cafe.
