Plot summary
Umekichi and Omocha are sisters who work as geisha in Kyoto's Gion district, and they disagree about how to deal with the men who pay them. Umekichi, trained in the classical manner and loyal to her patron, supports Shimbei Furusawa after he loses his house and business and leaves his wife. Omocha, educated in public schools and dressed in western clothes off duty, distrusts men and believes they take what they can from a geisha and then discard her. She tells her sister that keeping Furusawa costs her the chance of a new patron, and she arranges for a wealthy one. For herself she pursues the owner of a clothing shop.
