Plot summary
Kikunosuke Onoue, called Kiku, has been adopted into the family of a celebrated kabuki actor and trained to play female roles. Other members of the troupe praise his work to his face and laugh at it behind his back. Otoku nurses the baby of the actor's own child and is the only person who tells Kiku plainly that his acting is not good enough and that he needs to improve. Because the household fears a scandal over her closeness to the young master, she is dismissed.
