Plot summary
Kihachi Ichikawa once drew crowds as an actor, and now he leads a kabuki troupe that travels by train from town to town. In a provincial stop he leaves his actors behind, telling them he is going to see a patron, and calls on Otsune, who runs a restaurant. Years earlier she bore him a son. Shinkichi, that son, is a postgraduate student who believes his father was a civil servant and takes Kihachi for an uncle. The two spend an afternoon fishing for dace. Rain keeps audiences away from the troupe's performances, and Otaka, the company's lead actress and Kihachi's mistress, learns where he goes each day.
