Plot summary
The Toda family gathers to celebrate the sixty-ninth birthday of its patriarch, Shintarō, and poses for a photograph outdoors. Soon afterward he dies of a heart attack. His eldest son Shin'ichirō tells the family that their father had stood guarantor for a company that has gone bankrupt, and the debts must be paid. The family sells Shintarō's properties and valuable possessions, keeping only an old house by the sea. Mrs. Toda and her youngest daughter Setsuko, who is unmarried, move in with Shin'ichirō and his wife Kazuko. The other married children are scarcely happy to accommodate them. The unmarried second son, Shōjirō, leaves Japan for Tianjin, in China.
