Plot summary
Harue has nowhere to stay when Kihachi and Jiro, co-workers at a Tokyo brewery, come upon her after a rōkyoku performance. Jiro wants nothing to do with her, but Kihachi is charmed and asks Otome, a friend who runs a restaurant, to take her in. Harue lends a hand there, and Otome grows fond of her. Kihachi is a widower who cannot read and begins to smarten himself up so that Harue will notice him. His son Tomio is a good pupil at an elementary school. Jiro, in his thirties and younger than Kihachi, is rude to Harue and sees her only as a nuisance.
