Plot summary
Waka and her husband are raising their oldest son, Shintaro, in a family whose men have served in the army for three generations, in the decades from the Meiji era to the invasion of Manchuria. They expect Shintaro to serve as well. He is frail, and both parents fear that he will never be strong enough to become a good soldier, so much of their effort goes into molding him into one. The father's own poor health kept him out of combat during the Russo-Japanese War, and he grows angry when a friend doubts that Japan can win a war.

In Army's wordless final scene, Kinuyo Tanaka's Waka runs tearfully alongside her son Shintaro as he marches off with the army for the invasion of Manchuria; Japanese wartime censors were upset because mothers in films were expected to be proud to send their sons to battle, not upset.- After Army's premiere on November 22, 1944, an army officer reportedly stormed into the Shochiku studio and accused director Keisuke Kinoshita of treason; Kinoshita was not permitted to release another film until after the war ended.
