That Night's Wife (1930) on Netflix

Plot summary

Michiko is gravely ill and her family has no money for medicine. Her father, Shuji Hashizume, holds up a bank at gunpoint and gets away from the police, leaving a bloody handprint at the scene. Doctor Suda tells Michiko's mother, Mayumi, that the child might not last the night, though she will be past the worst of it if she pulls through. Michiko wakes and asks where her father is; Mayumi answers that he went out to get money for medicine. Shuji telephones a doctor from a phone booth and hears that Michiko's condition is critical. He takes a taxi home and hands Mayumi the stolen cash, and she works out where it came from. He says the family's poverty gave him no choice. Detective Kagawa arrives and forces his way into the apartment.
