Plot summary
The Asano clan's lord, Asano Naganori, quarrels with Kira Yoshinaka, an influential figure at the court of the Tokugawa shogunate. After Kira insults him in public, Asano attacks him with a blade in the castle, wounding him. Raising a weapon against an official of the shogunate is treated as a serious crime. Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi condemns Asano to commit seppuku and orders that the clan lose its lands and wealth. Kira faces no penalty, a result attributed to his family ties. The Asano household is ruined and its loyal samurai are turned into masterless ronin. A number of them want vengeance for their lord's dishonor, yet their leader, Kuranosuke Oishi, holds them back while he asks the shogun to give the clan back its standing.
