Plot summary
In 1950, Peter and Margit plan to leave communist Hungary for the United States, where Peter intends to start a publishing company. Taking children out of the country is difficult, so only their eldest daughter Maria travels with them, and the baby Zsuzsi stays with Margit's mother Helen. A woman hired to carry the infant over the border to Vienna comes for her, but Helen refuses to hand the child over, afraid she will be killed or abandoned. Before the secret police arrive to arrest Helen, Peter's friend George moves the baby to a rural house belonging to his mother, where the foster parents Jeno and Teri raise her. Margit appeals for help in letters to the United Nations, the American Red Cross and American politicians. Six years later, Zsuzsi flies to Los Angeles, and television news covers her arrival.
