Plot summary
On a stormy night, Kendra Ellis-Connor waits in a Miami police station for word of her son Jamal, who has disappeared. She presses Officer Paul Larkin, a rookie, for information, but he knows nothing about the incident and says she must wait for Lieutenant John Stokes. Her estranged husband Scott Connor, an FBI agent, turns up and demands to know where Jamal is. Larkin tells him that police stopped Jamal and two other black men, and that Jamal's car had a bumper sticker about violence against police officers. Kendra and Scott argue at length about their marriage and the strains of raising a biracial son in an affluent community. Kendra says Jamal feels isolated as one of very few black students at his school, while Scott says Jamal invited trouble by how he presented himself.
