Plot summary
Rachael Newman is a freshman studying criminology at a university in Washington. Her professor, Starkman, once worked for the FBI. Rachael intends to join the Bureau's training program at Quantico, and she believes the teaching assistant post in Starkman's department is the way to secure a place. The department secretary, Gertrude Fleck, throws out her application because she is only a freshman. Rachael does not give up; she is ready to kill the classmates who compete with her for the job. She also starts seeing the campus psychiatrist, Dr. Eric Daniels, who judges her to be a textbook sociopath fixated on Starkman. Daniels tries to warn Starkman without giving her name, held back by patient confidentiality, and Starkman takes the warning to concern a different student.
