Plot summary
Martin Tweed hosts American Dreamz, the singing contest that dominates the ratings and that he has come to despise. He sends his team out to find an unusual batch of contestants for the new season. Among the hopefuls is Sally Kendoo, from the Midwest, whose devoted boyfriend William Williams stands behind her. Omer Obeidi, a lover of show tunes sent to the United States by a jihadist group, is chosen for the show instead of his cousin Iqbal. President Staton, just re-elected, has begun reading the newspapers and keeping to his bedroom, and his Chief of Staff puts him on the program as a guest judge.

- Paul Weitz said the singing contest in the film was interpreted as a satire of American Idol almost by accident, and that the show's host is not based on Simon Cowell but on Hugh Grant himself, an egotistical, depressive cynic projected on screen as the show's only judge.
