Plot summary
The Allied armies are moving across France in August 1944, two months after the D-Day landings. Commandos from Britain and the United States are dropped behind enemy lines for a secret operation: ambush a German officer and take the maps he carries, which show where the German guns are positioned along the front. The soldiers are British; the captain in command, Gabriel Jackson, is American. Sergeant Harry McBain is among them, and the two men carry a personal animosity they both know has to be set aside for the mission to work.
