Plot summary
Violet Markey is a teenager in a small Indiana town who survived the car crash that killed her sister Eleanor nine months earlier, and she has avoided riding in cars since. On the day Eleanor would have turned nineteen, Violet stands at the edge of the bridge where the crash happened. Theodore Finch, out for a run and known to classmates as a loner, climbs up beside her and talks her down. He asks her to join him on a school assignment that sends students out to explore Indiana, and she agrees despite her reluctance. He finds her on Facebook, reads writing she did before, and messages her. Because she will not travel by car, they bike to the state's highest point, and she gets into his car to reach a miniature roller coaster.
