Plot summary
Yasuko Hanaoka runs a restaurant and raises her teenage daughter Misato alone. Next door lives Tetsuya Ishigami, a reclusive but brilliant mathematics teacher who buys his lunch at her restaurant; their morning exchanges are the brightest part of his day. One night Yasuko's abusive ex-husband, Togashi, comes to the apartment to extort money and threatens mother and daughter; the struggle leaves him dead. Ishigami overhears the commotion, deduces what happened and offers his help, disposing of the body and plotting the cover-up. Once the corpse is found and named, suspicion falls on Yasuko. Detective Kaoru Utsumi and her superior Shunpei Kusanagi find no gap in her alibi. They ask the physicist Manabu Yukawa for help; he refuses at first, but changes his mind when he hears that his former classmate Ishigami lives beside the suspect.
