Plot summary
Ali, a man of Pakistani descent, shares a house in Bradford with Runa, the wife he is separating from; she is still grieving the baby they lost before the birth. Ava lives on the Holme Wood estate, near her adult children, and some of them are parents themselves. The two meet at the school where she works, when he drops off Sofia, the daughter of his tenants, and their shared love of music gives them a reason to keep meeting. That common ground deepens into a connection, and they have to keep it from being overshadowed by the family ties and prejudices of their separate lives.
