Plot summary
In December 1926, Agatha Christie's marriage is coming apart. Mabel Rogers comes to her with a request: find out who killed her partner, Florence Nightingale Shore, beaten to death on a train in 1920. Christie agrees, and while the country searches for her, she travels as Mary Westmacott to a country house, where she has gathered everyone connected to Florence under the pretext that a fictitious American businessman has left them an inheritance. She poses as a law firm's representative and Mabel as housekeeper and cook. Among the guests are Daphne Miller, whose nursing career Florence might have ruined, Randolph, Florence's cousin and heir, Zaki Hanachi, a soldier she helped recover after the war, the boxer Travis Pickford, and Pamela Rose, whom Florence was travelling to meet. Daphne arrives with her father Wade, and Pamela with her son Franklin.
