Plot summary
A shoulder injury costs Terry Brogan his place as a receiver for the Los Angeles Outlaws. Jake Wise, a gambler and nightclub owner he knows from before, offers him work: find Jessie Wyler, hiding in the Mayan Riviera. Jessie is the adoptive daughter of Mrs. Wyler, the Outlaws' owner, and her relationship with Jake, a man involved in crime, displeases her mother. Mrs. Wyler, who shows no interest in Terry's football career, offers him more money to find Jessie for her instead. The trainer Hank Sully urges Terry to keep away from Jake, and Jake can blackmail Terry over a point-shaving incident. Terry takes the job and finds Jessie in Cozumel, where she greets him with suspicion, believing that Jake or her mother sent him.

- The remake gave a cameo to Jane Greer, the femme fatale of the 1947 Out of the Past: she plays Rachel Ward's mother in Against All Odds. Greer had held the infant Jeff Bridges in 1951's The Company She Keeps, in a scene with his real-life mother, Dorothy Bridges.
- Jeff Bridges' age and appearance in Against All Odds were used as reference to re-create a 35-year-old version of him for the characters Kevin Flynn and CLU in Tron: Legacy (2010).
